And unlike that other game, so many players are capable of putting up astronomical numbers that looking at the matchups is more important than ever. That said, there are a handful of stars worth owning. None of them are running backs.
Considering that most formats allow for one point per 15 yards passing and six points for each touchdown pass, quarterbacks are the stat kings of college fantasy football. Here's the rub: Six of the top seven college quarterbacks (by rating) from a year ago are gone, which makes the task of projecting that much tougher.
Don't worry. UPDATE! has you covered. We assembled a list of the top returning players. No freshmen make the list. And no tight ends, kickers or defenses crack the Top 50. Remember, this isn't a list of the best players in the game. Just the best fantasy players. Here's our Top 50:
1. COLT BRENNAN
Hawaii, QB
Comment: Flirted with turning pro, but opted to stay for his senior year. Brennan is a Heisman candidate after completing 73 percent of his passes for a whopping 5549 yards and 58 TDs to just 12 INTs. Those stats yielded an off the charts 186 rating and makes Brennan an obvious choice as the top pick in fantasy drafts. Aloha!
2. CHASE HOLBROOK
New Mexico State, QB
Comment: A projected first-round NFL Draft pick means this guy is a scout favorite. The senior completed 70 percent of his passes for 4,619 yards with 34 TDs and 9 INTs. That makes him a fantasy fav, too. Draft him high.
3. GRAHAM HARRELL
Texas Tech, QB
Comment: Junior completed 67 percent of his passes for 4,555 yards with 38 TDs and 11 INTs in his first full season.
4. NATE LONGSHORE
California, QB
Comment: Highly-touted junior is poised to do even more after completing 61 percent of passes for 3,021 yards with 24 TDs and 13 INTs.
5. BRIAN BROHM
Louisville, QB
Comment: Surprisingly low touchdown total. Brohm completed 63 percent of passes for 3,049 yards with 16 TDs to 5 INTs in 11 games. Expect a spike in TDs.
6. COLT MCCOY
Texas, QB
Comment: A true stud. McCoy isn't Vince Young, but he's already a better passer. He completed 68 percent of his passes for 2,570 yards with 29 TDs and 7 INTs.
7. RAY RICE
Rutgers, RB
Comment: No longer a punch line, Rice put punch into the Rutgers' offense. The Heisman candidate rushed for 1,794 yards (5.4 YPC) and 20 TDs. He'll do it again.
8. STEVE SLATON
West Virginia, RB
Comment: Offensive guru Rich Rodriguez will find a way to squeeze even more out of the hard-running Slaton. The back rushed for 1,744 yards (7.0 YPC) and 16 TDs.
9. BRANDEN ORE
Virginia Tech, RB
Comment: Ankle injury should be history. And Ore could be poised for a memorable season. The Hokies will be riding a sentimental wave of emotion all season. That means Ore can top last season when he ran for 1,137 yards (4.7 YPC) and 16 TDs.
10. IAN JOHNSON
Boise State, RB
Comment: Junior back rushed for 1,714 yards (6.2 yards / carry) and 25 TDs and scored an unforgettable two-point conversion to beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. Oh, he also proposed to a cheerleader after the winning score. Talk about clutch.
11. PATRICK WHITE
West Virginia, QB
Comment: The nation's top rushing QB with 1,219 yards (7.4 YPC) and 18 TDs. Did we mention White also completed 66 percent of his passes for 1655 yards with 13 TDs and 7 INTs? If you want to load up on rushing stats, then grab White early.
12. CHRIS WILLIAMS
New Mexico State, WR
Comment: Williams averaged a remarkable 117.92 yards a game a year ago, finishing with 1,415 yards and 12 TDs. Strong-armed Chase Holbrook is back, making the duo a lock for big things.
13. RYAN TORAIN
Arizona State, RB
Comment: The Sun Devils have the potential to be explosive on offense. Senior Torain could benefit in the red zone. He rushed for 1,229 yards (5.5 YPC) and 7 TDs a year ago. Torain is a prime breakout candidate.
14. CHASE DANIEL
Missouri, QB
Comment: All Daniel did was complete 64 percent of passes for 3,527 yards with 28 TDs and 10 INTs. He shattered school records for yards and TDs. Will he do it again?
15. P.J. HILL
Wisconsin, RB
Comment: History says Hill will have a monster year. No Joe Thomas? No Matter. He can better last season's 1,569 yards (5.1 YPC) and 15 TDs.
16. DARREN MCFADDEN
Arkansas, RB
Comment: Heisman runner-up is a special back. The reason why McFadden isn't rated higher is because he does play in the black-and-blue SEC and he'll share carries with another talented runner in Felix Jones. Still, another 1,647 yards (5.8 YPC) and 14 TDs is possible.
17. DAVONE BESS
Hawaii, WR
Comment: Back-to-back 1,100-yard seasons and 29 career TDs. That's what this gifted junior has accomplished. Expect more of the same.
18. CURTIS PAINTER
Purdue, QB
Comment: First full year as a starter was a tremendous one. He completed 59 percent of his passes for 3,985 yards with 22 TDs and 19 INTs. He ran for 6 TDs too. Possible Heisman run.
19. HARRY DOUGLAS
Louisville, WR
Comment: The undersized Douglas plays big. He caught 70 passes for 1,265 yards — good for 18 yards a catch — and 6 scores.
20. MICHAEL HART
Michigan, RB
Comment: Undersized but unstoppable. Hart is perhaps the best back in the game. Rushed for 1,562 yards (4.9 YPC) and 14 TDs a year ago. Just don't expect much more playing against Big Ten foes.
21. DESEAN JACKSON
Cal, WR
Comment: Exciting junior averaged 18 yards a catch and finished with 1,060 yards and 9 TDs. Those numbers set the baseline for what could be a monster 2007 season.
22. ADARIUS BOWMAN
Oklahoma State, WR
Comment: This athletic wideout averaged 19.7 yards a catch a year ago, finishing with 1181 yards and 12 TDs. He can do more.
23. JOHN DAVID BOOTY
USC, QB
Comment: Booty continued the recent legacy of great Trojans quarterbacks. But he had help with an electric receiving corps. Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith are gone and Booty will be hard-pressed to put up bigger numbers. He completed 61 percent of passes for 3,347 yards with 29 TDs and 9 INTs a year ago.
24. DAMION FLETCHER
Southern Mississippi, RB
Comment: Freshman All-American rushed for 1,388 yards (5.0 YPC) with 11 TDs. A Conference USA schedule says he'll do even better in 2007.
25. KEVIN SMITH
Central Florida, RB
Comment: Serious breakout candidate. Smith ran for 934 yards (4.5 YPC) and 7 TDs in nine games. Was the nation's second-leading true freshman rusher (1,178 yards) in 2005. He's recovered from a shoulder injury, and with 18 starters back, UCF could surprise teams.
