BCS OR JUST BS? May. 12, 2008
Talk about BCS! Bowl Championship Series administrators met in South Florida recently to hammer out the future of college football. But money and bureaucratic drudgery got in the way of what people really wanted to see get done — some sort of playoff.

In fact, just the opposite will happen this fall. The bowl system with become more bloated and bottom-heavy than ever.

There were 71 bowl-eligible football teams in Division I a year ago. With the addition of two new bowls, there's 68 slots available. That's the antithesis of March Madness, where plenty of "worthy" teams get left out of the Big Dance.

The NCAA approved the applications of the Congressional Bowl in Washington, D.C. and the St. Petersburg Bowl (Fla.). Just what the diluted bowl system needed. At least the NCAA also turned down the proposed Rocky Mountain Bowl in Salt Lake City.

What didn't get green-lighted was some form of championship playoff or plus-one format. TV contracts appeared to be one stumbling block. The Rose Bowl is locked in to ABC and The Big Ten through the 2014 game. Not only that, but Pac 10 and Big Ten representatives have already put the kibosh on the plus-one option.

So hold on to your hats, college football fans. The ride will get more unpredictable before it gets better.
