POSTED 1-29-07

I want to throw out some names at you that will be hard pressed to be of value this year based on where or what they will be going for.

Dan Uggla
Marlins second baseman
Uggla hit 27 Homers drove in 90 runs while hitting .282. I want to say he'll be this years Jorge Cantu—Cantu went 3 or 4th round last year and his numbers dropped to 14 homers 62 rbi's .249 average. Uggla will not give you value this year.

Frank Thomas
Blue Jays DH
We all kinda like "Big Hurt" but the fact of the matter he was a great value last year for all those owners who snatched him up. Scary is seeing him taken 5th or 6th round this year. Keep in mind his 2 previous years total was 30 homers and 75 runs batted in. Total for 2 years not averages I remind you. Hardly a value this year.

Brandon Phillips
Reds second baseman
Last year Jhonny Peralta was among most owners top tier shortstops after hitting 24 homers 78 RBI and a .292 average the previous season. Sound familiar? Phillps numbers were .276-17-75 this past year. Peralta dropped to .257-13-68. I think you'll see Phillips numbers close to that by seasons end. Don't overpay or strike to early for him this year.

Jermaine Dye
White Sox outfielder
Dye was a super value last year .315-44-120. But just went 46th in one experts league draft. I don't think he'll match those numbers this year, after all he's averaged .269-27-83 the previous 2 years. A solid player but only if you can get him in round 6 or 7. Maybe for $15 in a auction but he'll go for more and earlier wait and see...stay away!

Ray Durham
Giants second baseman
Much the same for Durham. What a great year .293-26-93. But his previous 2 year averages were .286-14-64. He'll not be a value this year if you take him before the 10th round with guys like Tad Iguchi, Ian Kinsler still around a couple or rounds later or few a bucks less...

The exciting part of fantasy baseball is taking a guy late like Verlander or Thomas last year and seeing them give you the value of a 5th or 6th round pick or a $25 player. We all take pride when our flier turns out. So this year as you compile your list or rank your players step out from what others think and don't be afraid to think that Chuck James or Chad Billingsley could be this years Justin Verlander or that Adrian Gonzalez or Josh Barfield could be this years Garrett Atkins or Brandon Phillips...move them up.
