NEW JERSEY NOOSE

POSTED 1-29-08

There are rotisserie heroes and fantasy goats. But some performances are so ugly, egregious or plain perplexing that it begs the refrain: What the F--k! Here is Update's seriously twisted moment this week.

Normally when mix two playmakers in their prime and a Hall of Fame point guard you get a NBA title contender. So, what happened to the New Jersey Nets? Since Vince Carter joined the nets midway through the 2004-05 season, the Nets have routinely under-performed. Up to now it has been easy to make excuses. First, they needed to go through an 'adjustment period', then there was Nenad Kristic and Richard Jefferson's crippling injuries. But what excuse do they have this season? They have lost nine in a row, and Jason Kidd is asking for out. "We tried to make this work. We've found out it doesn't," Kidd told ESPN The Magazine on Monday. "It's time for us all to move on." The Nets have lost 16 of their last 25 games and plummeted to the cellar of the Eastern Conference. Where did they go wrong? It's unfair to lay the blame entirely on Carter, who has dogged it in the past. And Kidd and Jefferson are having career years. So why can't this team put it together. The biggest mystery in sports is what gets a team over 'the hump'. Look at the New Orleans Hornets. If anyone tells you they predicted the Hornets would be sitting at the top of the Western Conference right before the All Star break, they're lying. If Kidd is crying trade, then how long before Carter sings a similar tune? And what about Jefferson? The Nets are in a bad place. Now how are they going to get out of it?
