DEATH OF INNOCENCE

POSTED 11-27-07

There are rotisserie heroes and fantasy goats. But some performances are so ugly, egregious or plain perplexing that it begs the refrain: What the F--k! Here is Update's seriously twisted moment this week.

It's tragic whenever an athlete's career is cut short. Injuries are an accepted part of the game. But never death. It's a somber day when death wins out. We were reminded of this twice in the last week. Former Toronto Blue Jays reliever Joe Kennedy died suddenly on Friday and Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor passed on Tuesday after being shot in the leg at his Miami home. Kennedy, who collapsed at his in-laws' home in Tampa, will be buried in Denver on Friday. He helped the Oakland Athletics reach the ALCS in 2006 and compiled a 43-61 record in seven big league seasons. The 28-year-old was a free agent. Taylor's loss is even more stunning. The former All-American helped Miami reach back-to-back BCS Championship games in 2002-03 and was the fifth overall pick of the Redskins in 2004. He was coming off his first Pro-Bowl season a year ago and led the NFC with five interceptions this season despite missing two games with injury. Taylor was shot in the leg on Monday and suffered significant blood loss. He died overnight. It's important for us all to step back and take a breather today — take a moment to reflect. Yes, I'm fighting for playoff spots in both my fantasy football leagues. OK, my Miami Dolphins found another way to lose on Monday night in the swamp that was Heinz Field. But even the cynic inside me can't help but shed a tear. RIP boys.
