THE RIGHT CALL?
Keep your eye on how the New York Mets handle the situation in right field. Shawn Green plays this week. Green was pretty good in the Mets' series against the St. Louis Cardinals, going 4-for-12 with a couple of runs and an RBI. While he had a miserable spring, Green seems to be a nice fit batting seventh in the Mets lineup, for now. But how long can the Mets let outfielder Lastings Milledge, who had a terrific spring, sit on the bench? This week is crucial as pitcher Mike Pelfrey is expected to be called-up in time to start in the series against the Washington Nationals that begins on April 13. The New York Times is reporting that, "it would not make sense for the Mets to send down anyone other than Milledge, who could continue to develop by playing regularly at Class AAA New Orleans." For now, it looks like Milledge is headed back to the minors, but check any updates on this situation.
KING FELIX
While we are only in the infant stage of the 2007 MLB season, it is looking like this is the year where we officially crown the king (and we are not talking about the creepy burger guy). Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Felix Hernandez was brilliant on Opening Day against the Oakland Athletics allowing only three hits, two walks, no runs and striking out a career-high 12 batters. King Felix dropped 20 pounds during the off-season and has committed himself to having a successful season. The early results look great and Hernandez is scheduled to make two starts this week, one on the road against the Cleveland Indians and one at home opposing the Texas Rangers. Monitor these starts, if Hernandez can be as sharp as he was on Opening Day, fantasy owners would be wise to make a strong play for the starter who could easily wind up being one of the best fantasy pitchers around.
SHEA HOME COOKING
After absolutely dominating the 2006 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals, the New York Mets will look to carry that momentum into a homestand featuring the struggling Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals. While most of the Mets lineup started the season hitting very well, first baseman Carlos Delgado will look to get on track after only going 2-for-13 against the Cards. Delgado played well in the past against the Phillies with a .328 career average against them. Others who should be considered strong starts against Philadelphia include shortstop Jose Reyes (who hit at a .360 clip with 7 HRs, 18 RBI and 22 runs in 2006) and catcher Paul LoDuca (.349 average in 2006). Against the Nationals, third baseman David Wright (.338, 15 runs, 4 homers, 12 RBI last year) and centerfielder Carlos Beltran (career against: 40 runs and .310 average) figure to produce well.
FURCAL STILL HURT
Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal was hoping that he could return this weekend from an ankle injury suffered in Spring Training. But according to The Los Angeles Times, "Furcal is still unable to run on his sprained left ankle and it is becoming increasingly likely that his stay on the disabled list will extend beyond Saturday...The Dodgers don't expect Furcal to require a minor league rehabilitation assignment." Needless to say, this is frustrating news for fantasy owners who have drafted the speedy infielder. It is particularly disconcerting that this is an ankle injury we are talking about and he is a guy who thrives on the base paths. If you own Furcal, stash him away for the time being. The Dodgers are not making too big a deal out of this and must not be that worried if they believe he can jump right back into the majors when ready.
CAN'T CATCH BREAK
The Baltimore Orioles are off to a rough start this season and the news just does not get any better. Baltimore Orioles catcher Ramon Hernandez is suffering from a strained oblique and according to MLB.com, "[Hernandez] would likely have to take a few days of batting practice before the Orioles would consider slotting him into the lineup...Baltimore manager Sam Perlozzo wouldn't commit to a timeline on Wednesday, but he admitted the DL is a distinct possibility." Fantasy owners everywhere were drafting Hernandez this year after a season in which he hit 23 home runs with 91 RBI. Backup catcher Paul Bako figures to get most of the at-bats with the absence of Hernandez, but Bako is only a viable option for the deepest of fantasy leagues.
