CURTIS MARTIN RETIRES
Star running back Curtis Martin announced his retirement from the Jets on Thursday. "Retirement is not an end but a beginning," Martin said in a statement. "It is not giving up a position but more of a passing of the baton." The 34-year-old Martin leaves the team as the No. 4 rusher in League history with 14,101 yards over 11 active seasons. Additionally, Martin was selected to five Pro Bowls, scored 100 career touchdowns and recorded seven consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. The Jets brought in Thomas Jones during the off-season as a legitimate successor to the popular Martin. Jones has recorded 1,200-plus yards in each of his past two seasons and should be regarded as a No. 1 running back. Expect Jones to command 300 touches en route to another fantasy worthy campaign.
DUNN INJURED
Atlanta Falcons running back Warrick Dunn will likely miss three to four weeks and both pre-season games due to a back injury. The Falcons revealed Wednesday that Dunn was hurt during off-season workouts and had surgery performed on him last Saturday. This could be a crippling blow for the Falcons, who will also be without quarterback Michael Vick. Warrick led the team last season with 1,140 yards and five touchdowns. And although Dunn is slated to appear in the opener against Minnesota, expect the Falcons to limit his playing time early. Dunn's backup, Jerious Norwood, looks to benefit most from this injury. If Norwood performs well early on, then he could supplant Dunn for the starting job. Norwood rushed for 633 yards in his rookie season and should be considered a definite sleeper candidate for 2007.
STRAIN SIDELINES LOSMAN
Buffalo Bills starting quarter back J.P. Losman was held out of the start of training camp this week due to a lower back strain. Coach Dick Jauron has listed Losman day-to-day and placed Losman on the physically unable to perform list. Losman isn't expected to miss any significant time and is being held out of practices merely as a precaution. Losman looks to continue the strong play that concluded last season; he led the Bills offense in producing 17 touchdowns over its final seven games in 2006. Losman figures to be one of the few bright spots on a weak Bills team. Don't be surprised if he throws 3,500 yards and over 20 touchdowns. He is a low-risk quarterback with a huge upside.
TITANS SIGN MOULDS
The Tennessee Titans signed veteran receiver Eric Moulds on Wednesday, adding some much needed experience to aid Vince Young. Moulds has been a solid contributor throughout his 11 NFL seasons, contributing 800-yards or more in seven of his last nine seasons. His 57 receptions and 557-yard performance with the Texans in 2006 should not be considered the benchmark for his future with the Titans. Moulds will be a borderline No. 1 receiver for the Titans and should be considered a definite second-tier wide out in fantasy play. Another 800-plus yards, multiple touchdown season is in the cards for Moulds.
JOHNSON STILL SITS
Calvin Johnson has yet to sign a contract with the Detroit Lions, meaning he will not begin training camp workouts this week. Johnson was chosen as the second-pick in the 2007 draft and was considered by many to be the top draftee in a deep class. An immense talent with monster potential, Johnson caught 78 passes for 1,202 yard and 15 TDs his final season at Georgia Tech. Rookie receivers, however, sometimes have a tough time making an impact, and any delays getting Johnson on the field will further stunt his development. Johnson will be an elite receiver someday, but it's looking less and less like it will be this season with the Lions.
