POSTED 1-14-08

Our weekly digest of everything fantasy hockey. Facts don't lie and Power Plays is full of 'em. Projections for the week of Jan. 14-Jan. 20. Stats through Jan. 13:

RYAN GETZLAF
Anaheim Ducks, C
Comment: This kid is a phenom. He's on a wild nine-game point streak, where he's potted four goals and 12 points and keeps his plus / minus flying.

SCOTT HARTNELL
Philadelphia Flyers, LW
Comment: I picked Hartnell up just as the week began and was rewarded with five goals in three games, including a hat trick. Hartnell's versatile (he plays both wings) and racks up the penalty minutes (95), but who knew he had the ability to score? He was heating up as Dec. ended and should prove to have a productive second half. Plus, he's probably available in your league.

COREY PERRY
Anaheim Ducks, RW
Comment: You're kidding me, right? Vrbata has been the Coyotes' best offensive player by far and has been scorching the goals column recently. He has five goals and six points in his last five games to go with his 18 goals and 32 points on the season. And he's a plus-8! He's doing this in Phoenix, people! PHOENIX!

NIKLAS KRONWALL
Detroit Red Wings, D
Comment: Kronwall mostly provides fantastic plus / minus numbers (plus-13 on the year), but he's adding points to his value as well with three assists and a goal in his last five games.

J.S. GIGUERE
Anaheim Ducks, G
Comment: He hasn't lost in regulation in Jan., winning three of his last four games, providing a shutout and all you can ask for with a 1.21 GAA during that four game stretch.
MIKE COMRIE
New York Islanders, C
Comment: He's as cold as cold can be right now, going pointless in his last four. He's a streaky player and is slowly getting back to his normal point totals of no higher than 60. He'll likely be shut down by the New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers this week and his chances hinge on the play of Cristobal Huet and Martin Biron.

PAVOL DEMITRA
Minnesota Wild, LW
Comment: Where linemate Marian Gaborik has thrived, Demitra has floundered. He's been relatively healthy but not up to his normal pace. He's only registered a point in his last four games and his plus / minus is incredibly inconsistent. Something's gotta give with this guy.

TOMAS HOLMSTROM
Detroit Red Wings, RW
Comment: Detroit has been scoring and he has only had one assist in his last three games. If you ignore his injury, that's one assist in his last four games. But don't worry...he'll be back on your radar this week.

JAROSLAV SPACEK
Dallas Stars, D
Comment: Zubov missed two games with an injury, however he's been chilly long before this. He has two points in his last eight games, but you can be sure of one thing: his plus / minus will always be respectable. It won't be great but he won't let it dip below plus-5 for very long.

TOMAS VOKOUN
Florida Panthers, G
Comment: One win in his last seven starts is no replacement for Roberto Luongo. His GAA has been disgusting as well, hovering between 3.00 and 5.42 in that stretch of time. He's been awful as of late and gets no help in front of him.

PAUL STASTNY
Colorado Avalanche, C
Comment: Tampa should be a big game for Stastny with their inconsistent keeping and terrible defense, but he'll maintain his point-per-game pace against Chicago and Columbus.

DANIEL BRIERE
Philadelphia Flyers, C
Comment: He's surprisingly taken a back seat to Mike Richards, but with Simon Gagne back I expect Briere to be teamed with him again and capitalize on it. Watch for these guy soon.

SIMON GAGNE
Philadelphia Flyers, LW
Comment: He seems to be 100% healthy again and scored a goal and an assist in his first two games back since Nov. 7. With either Mike Richards or Briere feeding him the puck Gagne should put on a clinic this week.

ILYA KOVALCHUK
Atlanta Thrashers, LW
Comment: There are quality matchups ahead, and he is ripping through the rankings right now with a four game goal streak and a nine game point streak totaling 15 points. His Thrashers finally put an end to Ty Conklin's winning streak with the help of Kovie's opening goal.

MARIAN GABORIK
Minnesota Wild, RW
Comment: He only has two games this week but they are both at home where he plays his best (27 points in 19 games), while he dominates the Flames with five points in two games. Expect another great week in limited starts for Gabby.

DANIEL ALFREDSSON
Ottawa Senators, RW
Comment: Alfie has gone wild. He could have a career season this year and is on a nine game point streak. If it weren't for a pointless night on Dec. 22, Alfie's streak would be dating back to Nov. 29. He will continue to lead the Senators, especially with Dany Heatley possibly out of the lineup.

TOMAS KABERLE
Toronto Maple Leafs, D
Comment: A busy week and an All Star selection should be enough to fuel his fire. Aside from the Sabres this week (one point in two games), Kaberle has at least a point per game against his other three opponents for the week. Even though the Leafs have been shelled the past few weeks, Kaberle has not dropped any lower than a minus-1 in any of those games dating back to Nov. 24. He'll get you your points this week and keep you afloat.

ANDREI MARKOV
Montreal Canadiens, D
Comment: He's back on track after slowing down in Dec. and proving why he was voted onto the All Star team this year. A good matchup this week will be against Atlanta and now that Ty Conklin's reign has come to an end the flood gates may have opened.

MARTY TURCO
Dallas Stars, G
Comment: Turco's been very good as of late. Aside from a brutal game against Minnesota, he's kept his numbers down and lost only once in his last four games. Expect a good week, with four solid games against great matchups. Turco will likely face Anaheim twice, a team in which he has two wins and a 0.50 GAA. San Jose could be the only roadblock in the great week.

HENRIK LUNDQVIST
New York Rangers, G
Comment: They snapped their five game losing streak because of his superb play and he seems to be back on track. They couldn't be facing Pittsburgh at a better time, either, with Conklin's first loss finally coming Saturday night. Lundy has Pittsburgh's number (3-1, 1.49 GAA) and Boston hasn't been scoring with much frequency.

OLLIE JOKINEN
Florida Panthers, C
Comment: Jokinen isn't explosive against any of his opponents and is coming into this week very cold. Brodeur will always be incredibly tough and Marty Biron will look to have a good showing after sitting on the bench for four straight.

BRAD RICHARDS
Tampa Bay Lightning, C
Comment: Don't let last Saturday fool you. That two goal outburst is not the norm. Aside from that, he has only three assists in his last eight games. A minus-25 on the year. This Lady Byng winner doesn't have much fantasy value right now. Only two games this week and one of them is against Ottawa. His plus / minus will be absolutely terrible in what should be a high scoring game and he likely won't be on the positive end of the scoring, either, as Tampa is terrible on the road.

JASON BLAKE
Toronto Maple Leafs, LW
Comment: Once again, Blake falls off the map. I don't even want to talk about Toronto's offense anymore. Just know that he is not the Blake who scored 40 goals last season. And he isn't the Blake who'll get you anything of note this week, either.

RAY WHITNEY
Carolina Hurricanes, LW
Comment: Whitney was getting back on track when a nasty flu bug hit him hard. That will zap the spirit out of any athlete, so don't expect him at full form this week. This kills fantasy weeks.

RADIM VRBATA
Phoenix Coyotes, RW
Comment: He's been a pleasant surprise for both Phoenix and fantasy owners alike, but don't count on him this week. He's streaky and going into some brutal matchups, most notably San Jose. He hasn't registered a point in five games at the Shark Tank and a minus-4 in that time.

J.P. DUMONT
Nashville Predators, RW
Comment: Dumont is on one of his best streaks of the season but as we know, it is one streak of many the crafty winger can have. Dumont might have a decent game against Calgary depending on if Miikka Kiprusoff decides to show up, but that's all you can hope for. He only has one point in three meetings with Anaheim and none in three against St. Louis. St. Louis and Anaheim don't seem to be budging and Dumont is due for one of his cold streaks.

SERGEI GONCHAR
Pittsburgh Penguins, D
Comment: With a short week and Conklin's streak at an end, things might take a strange turn for Pittsburgh. It's likely the team will be fine but Gonchar might not be the best option for this week. New York seems to have gotten it's act together and Montreal — his best option — has solved Gonchar this season, keeping him scoreless this season.

BRET BURNS
Minnesota Wild, D
Comment: Burns has been a great acquisition for fantasy owners. Amazing, actually. You won't be thinking that this week, though, with only two games ahead and a cold streak on his tail. Expect the quiet play from Burns to continue.

NIKLAS BACKSTROM
Minnesota Wild, G
Comment: Who knows if he will get one, both or none of the two start this week. Two games both against high scoring offenses in Calgary and Anaheim won't be good matchups even if he does get the start.

VESA TOSKALA
Toronto Maple Leafs, G
Comment: The Leafs are in one of their worst slides in recent memory and Toskala is being thrown in the middle of it. They have a brutal week ahead — a week where Toskala owners should feel very worried. Toskala has not one a game this season against any of his opponents this week, and I don't see why you would want to trust him.

J.P. Del Monte is UPDATE! National Hockey League Editor.

1,000 Vancouver left wing Markus Naslund is just three games away from his 1000th career game.

348 Detroit Red Wings defender Chris Chelios became the oldest American player the NHL when he reached 45 years and 348 days.

68 New York Rangers left winger Ryan Hollweg went 68 games without a goal and managed to notch two in the same game.

43 Consecutive starts for San Jose Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov.

DAVID CLARKSON
New Jersey Devils, RW
Comment: Clarkson, for some reason, decided Jan. would be the month to show the world what he can do. This undrafted Toronto native has been grinding it out for the Devils this season and has a goal and two assists in his last six games. Not incredibly prolific, but note that he also has 100 PIMs on the season. He might not become a fantasy stud but if his offensive numbers increase over the next few seasons he could provide some great penalty value.

LIGHTNING @ PENGUINS

Friday, 7:30 p.m. E.T.
All season long we have heard one argument: is Sidney Crosby better than Vincent Lecavalier? Who's the best hockey player in the world? More gas is going to poured on the fire this week as the Lightning head into Pittsburgh and Vinnie tries to shut down the Sidney show. Flashes of brilliance galore, ladies and gents!
